Nine Years Later "Maria, can you get the phone for me?" my mother yells from the living room. I can hear her, and I can hear the phone ringing, but I choose not to answer either. Instead, I turn up the volume on my iPod so that it blasts in my ears. I swing my legs as I sit on the stair banister. It's the spiral kind, and made entirely of glass. I climb into the shower with the bathroom lights off. There's just enough light so that I can see, but enough darkness that I feel alone, separated, away from the rest of the world. With shaking fingers, I turn the tap on, and warm water starts running. I increase the heat. I'm afraid to close my eyes. Because all I see when I close them are terrible, awful things. Here's the thing about the Silver Men. They've been told to hunt you. They are after you. And they will find you. They never make mistakes. Well. Except for once. Let me tell you what happened. Our old house used to have the most amazing apple tree in the backyard. Not only were the apples the sweetest things you'll ever eat, but the tree was perfect for climbing. I'm talking good, sturdy boughs, dense leaves to hide you when you don't want your dad to find you… Anyway, it was a lazy Sunday afternoon. Mom was out grocery shopping, so Dad, Meghan and I were playing outside. I was seven at the time, and my sister Meghan was twelve.

Prologue Fire poured from the heavens like deadly golden rain, setting ablaze everything in its path. Earthquakes followed soon after, tearing the ground apart as it trembled violently. Prologue "I'm sorry," he said, quietly, callously. The words raked over me, and my knees trembled. This couldn't be happening. I had done everything. Everything. Why wasn't that enough? "Chase," my voice quaked. "Please." I could see him trying to hide his disgust. Even now, as his perfectly disarrayed bronze hair was tousled in the December breeze, my heart sped up. His beautiful blue eyes flecked with silver still turned my legs to jelly. The memory of his charming smile, the sound of his light laughter rose in my memories, and I bit back tears. "Faith." His voice was gentle, which was worse than when he'd been unfeeling.
